From Painful Menstruation to Pain Free Periods

If you, another female family member, or friend suffer from P.M.S. or pain before and during your period try the practices here. You may find all of them work for you or you only need one or two.

Pain around menstruation occurs for a variety of reasons. One of the most common is that the abdominal area of the body which houses the female reproductive areas, simply does not have sufficient ‘space’. It does not have sufficient physical space for good energy rhythm and flow for all the functions to work well.

Both men and women are physically seated more than before in daily life. Think of the time spent in the car, in planes, in front of the computer, watching television or movies. This makes it more difficult for the body to keep the best posture and breathing for healthy menstruation.

Stagnant Liver Qi (energy) can be seen on a physical level as backache, tender breasts, headaches, feeling bloated, constipation, irregular periods, depression, breast masses and painful periods.  Liver Qi imbalance can affect ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, large intestine, spleen and stomach channels. If the movement through the channels is not flowing easily it can contribute to breast lumps, emotional instability, abdominal distension, thyroid disorders, vocal dysfunction and heart problems.

Stagnant blood in the pelvic area can results in blood clots, cramps, fibroids in the uterus, infertility, pain during intercourse and the cessation of menstrual period.

There are many Qigong practices to improve the energy flow to the reproductive organs and create more space for energy to flow through the blood, fluids, and organs. It will take three or more menstrual cycles to release stagnant energy that causes the pain.

  1. Abdomen Cherishing. This exercise can be done lying down, sitting or standing. Women: begin by placing the left hand on the abdomen slightly below the navel, and the right hand on top of the left. Move hands anti-clockwise first.

Slowly and gently rotate your hands in a small circle around the navel area (women anticlockwise, men clockwise) gradually making the circles larger until you cover the whole abdomen from the pubic bone to the bottom of the sternum (breast bone).

    Do 36 rotations.

Reverse the hands (women left hand on body, men the right hand) and the rotations, moving from outside circles back to the small circles at the Dan Tian.

    Do 36 rotations.

  2. Massage Liver & Liver Points. Place you right hand palm flat on the right side of the lower rib cage (over the liver) and the left hand palm flat on the left lower rib cage (spleen).  Rotate hands in an outward direction, from centre to the outside of your body.

Do this for 2 to 3 minutes.

Then seated (easiest) bend over and use the index finger of each hand to massage up and down the area between the big toe and second toe up the foot about 2 cm. to Liver channel point 3.

    Do for 1 minute.

  1. Eat warm cooked food and warm water for drinks. If pain is present reduce your intake of coffee.  Cold food and drinks aggravate the Qi, blood, and fluid flow.

  1. Great suggestions- I also recommend Goodnighties sleepwear – really comfortable fabric that stimulates blood flow (negative ions) and will also help you sleep better. I love them! Sarah BW
